Latvian Literary Translation Scholarships

Twice a year, the Culture Capital Foundation in co-operation with Latvian Literature Centre announces a scholarship competition for translators of Latvian fiction, drama and children's literature.

Scholarships for translation of fiction

Applications are accepted from any Latvian or foreign publisher who wishes to publish a Latvian author's work, or any translator who has a contract with a Latvian or foreign publisher for the translation of a work.

The following documents must be submitted to the competition:

  • application form
  • copy of publisher's and copyright holder's contract
  • copy of publisher's and translator's contract
  • publisher's written statement about his financial commitment to publish the book
  • translator's CV and list of translations

Scholarships for translation of fiction samples

The competition supports the preparation of sample translations of previously published or unpublished fiction, drama and children's literature. Applicants must be Latvian or foreign publishers who wish to become acquainted with and evaluate a Latvian author's work, translators who wish to translate a sample of a work for a specific publisher, or translators who simply wish to improve their professional skills (to apply to the competition a contract with a publisher is not necessary).

The following documents must be submitted to the competition:

  • application form
  • author's or publisher's and translator's agreement about the sample translation
  • synopsis of the work to be translated
  • translator's CV and list of translations

Final dates for submissions for 2004: April 20th and October 20th
