Egils Venters is a Latvian journalist and prose writer. Born in 1964, he graduated in Latvian language and literature and initially worked as lecturer and cultural journalist. His debut was a collection of short stories „Melnā sērija” (Serie noire), 1992, followed by a collection of novellas, „Melanholijas skaidrojošā vārdnīca” (Dictionary of Melancholy), in 2000, and the novels „Āgenskalns” (Suburban Girl) in 2004 and Radio Luxembourg in 2007. He also wrote a theatre play in 1994. In autumn 2006 he spent a month in Koper together with the Swedish writer Pirkko Lindberg and Irish poet Celia de Fréine. The residency inspired Million Tolar Baby, the first of a series of short stories entitled Koperetta.
